Young adults in America are more likely to live with their parents than to live with a spouse, partner, or roommates.
About a third (32.1 percent) of Americans 18 to 34 years old live in their parents’ home, the highest percentage since 1940, according to Pew Research.
Slightly fewer—31.6 percent—are married or cohabiting. That’s down nearly half from 62 percent in 1960.
“Dating back to 1880, the most common living arrangement among young adults has been living with a romantic partner, whether a spouse or a significant other,” wrote Richard Fry of Pew Research. Today this is no longer the case.
“This turn of events is fueled primarily by the dramatic drop in the share of young Americans who are choosing to settle down romantically before age 35,” wrote Fry.
