Summary
“The Bible contains sixty-six books written by more than forty authors, but is ultimately one book written by one author—God the Holy Spirit.”[1] The Story of Scripture introduces the reader to Biblical Theology as a discipline and tool for the believer. Biblical theology seeks to answer the question “How is the Bible one book?”[2] Emerson walks the reader through the entirety of the scriptures from a thirty-thousand foot view.
Looking at the “story-shape of Scripture commonly known as Creation, Fall, Redemption, Restoration (or New Creation), ”[3] the ultimate goal of the book “is to see how the Bible fits together as one book, about one person, Jesus Christ, God the Son in human flesh.”[4] Perhaps, the most useful chapter is the chapter six where Emerson gives application for Biblical Theology in the life of the believer. He explains Biblical Theology metaphorically as a topographical map that helps the reader understand where they are, where they’re going, and how to get there.[5]
Benefit for Pastoral Ministry
Any benefits for pastoral ministry depends on how much the pastor has already studied Biblical theology. The book provides a great overview of the story of Scripture from creation to redemption and would be extremely helpful for a pastor who wants their people better understand the big-picture story of Scripture.
The accessibility of the book is probably its greatest strength, since so many people seem to avoid long works. Emerson’s work is brief at only 112 pages. Even if you do not personally benefit from this book, I believe your people might.
