“On the Horizon” is a preview of newsworthy events coming within the week.
We Hold These Truths to Be Self Evident
Patriotic displays will take place all over the country this week in honor of the 242nd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. May your hotdogs and hamburgers be grilled, and your fireworks be spectacular.
Last week’s shock retirement announcement from Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy turned up the interest on the future of the judicial branch. Kennedy has been the deciding vote on several cases involving social issues over the past 30 years, and the opening provides President Donald Trump the opportunity to shape the court for a generation.
End of Roe v. Wade?
With the Kennedy opening on the high court, those opposed to abortion see a potential end in sight to the Roe v. Wade decision. While a reversal or vacating of that decision wouldn’t immediately outlaw abortion in the United States, it would allow for strict regulations (and possible outlawing) to be placed on abortion in more than a dozen states.
Historic Helsinki Meeting
It was announced over the weekend that Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Helsinki on July 16. The meeting of the two presidents is sure to bring the issue of election tampering back to the surface.
La La Land for Lebron
NBA superstar LeBron James announced last night that he will be headed to the Los Angeles Lakers for the next four years. James, whose teams have reached the NBA finals for the past nine years, will now find much stiffer competition in the Western Conference than he had in the Eastern Conference playing for Cleveland and Miami.
